Game 1 Knockout Round Prediction

The knockout rounds are finally here. Hopefully these predictions go better than my group stage picks. Don't worry—I know I'll have to answer for some of those awful predictions. You would think that working with Bethesda Soccer Club would help my predictions(WE HAVE ONE MORE HOME GAME ON JULY 8TH, BE THERE)  but alas,it didn’t.  I'll be picking every knockout match from here on out. Luckily, there's only one game today, so my record will either be perfect or as bad as my Norway pick.

South Africa vs. Canada

Canada enters this match as the favorite, but I think this game will be much closer than many people expect. South Africa has already exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in its history. Their run has been built on disciplined defending, organized team play, and the ability to stay in games—well, besides that opening match.

The biggest question for Canada is consistency. They dominated Qatar, but they also showed some defensive vulnerabilities during the group stage. If South Africa can stay compact, frustrate Canada early, and capitalize on any mistakes, this could turn into a tense, low-scoring match.

That said, Canada has the more dangerous attack, and if Alphonso Davies is available, I think he'll be the difference-maker. His pace and ability to create chances in transition could be exactly what Canada needs to break South Africa down.

Canada won't have an easy afternoon, but I think their quality eventually shines through and sends them into the round of 16.
